It is an ancient healing system. and is more than 5000 years old. Ayurveda originated in India and is regarded as the mother of all healing systems. Ayurveda emphasizes achieving a healthy life by preventing and treating illness through lifestyle practices like massage, meditation, yoga, and dietary changes. Herbs are used to cure different ailments in the body. Ayurveda is being accepted all over the world due to its organic nature and safety profile.

In Ayurveda, it is believed that the human body is made up of five basic elements in the universe: space, air, fire, water, and earth. these combine in the human body to form three life forces or energies called doshas. they control the human body’s normal working. They are Vata dosha( space and air) Pitta dosha( fire and water) and Kapha dosha (water and earth). Each dosha controls different body functions. There is a balance between three body doshas depending upon the nature of each person. Every individual has a unique combination of doshas. As per Ayurveda to lead a healthy life, a balance between the three doshas must be maintained. And when the balance between these doshas gets disturbed person falls sick.

What is good health?

The balance between the doshas gets disturbed by indulging in faulty lifestyles and dietary habits. That leads to various diseases in the body. Thus, for normal body functions, the original balance between the doshas needs to be maintained. A person is judged to be healthy in the following aspects:

  • Proper strength.
  • Proper digestion of food at fixed intervals.
  • Sleeping well at fixed hours.
  • Proper evacuation of fecal matter and urination.
  • absence of any kind of pain.
  • Proper mental and sensory functioning.

Ayurveda leads to a healthy life by focusing on what we eat, how we live, what the environment in which we live is, and the state of our minds. It guides us on how to lead a healthy and disease-free life. And to age with dignity and grace. Ayurveda concentrates on health maintenance and making the body’s immunity strong for preventive health. Herbs are used to cure various ailments in the body. Ayurveda focuses on lifestyle changes like diet and nutrition and adopting a daily healthy routine.

Diet and Nutrition.

Diet plays a major role in physical and mental health. As per Ayurveda, many health issues can be resolved by consuming a healthy diet. Further, it makes our immunity strong to prevent infections. Our diet should be as per our surroundings (season). We should consume seasonal and local fruits and vegetables. To maintain good health one should eat less than the hunger feeling. Food should be consumed as per the digestive power (Agni) of a person. Our diet is one of the most important factors which have a direct impact on our doshas. To maintain a balance between our body doshas our diet should contain all the tastes (Rasas) in a balanced form. Following are a few suggestions as per Ayurveda that can lead to a healthy life:-

  • Eating a fibrous diet. A person should consume 50-100 gm. of fiber per day.
  • 60% to 70% of the diet should come from seasonal vegetables and fruits
  • Food should be prepared a maximum of three hours before eating.
  • Eating at regular and fixed hours. The last meal should be consumed a minimum of two hours before sleeping. Avoid overeating.
  • Avoid eating hurriedly or very slowly. Proper chewing of food should be practiced.
  • Eating in a calm atmosphere with a joyful mood and concentrated mind.
  • Avoid taking junk food and aerated drinks.
  • Increase the intake of milk, buttermilk, lassi, coconut water, etc.
  • Optimize salt and sugar intake.
Daily Routine for a healthy life.

Following are the daily routine guidelines as per Ayurveda to lead a healthy life:-

Waking up early in the morning – Waking up early in the morning before dawn (4.30 – 5 A.M.) ensures a person grasps the freshness present in the atmosphere. That makes him feel fresh and full of positive vibes.

Give your day – A sweet start – Starting your day with honey and water, relieves your body of toxins. It has antibacterial properties also.

Eliminate toxins – Get rid of toxins present in the body in the form of urine or poop. Delaying the exertion process may poison the body and create chronic health problems.

Morning Walk – Walking is the best form of exercise, that can relieve you of mental stress. It provides mental, emotional, and physical peace without creating a strain on the body.

Planning a daily schedule – A planned daily schedule ensures mental, emotional, and physical balance. And avoids working stress, which is not good for health.

Use of Herbs: Herbs and spices like ginger, garlic, turmeric, cumin seeds, black pepper, etc. have properties to reduce bad cholesterol, prevent infections, make immunity strong, and trigger body metabolism.

Proper Hydration – Hydrate your body by drinking an optimum quantity of water, as per your body’s requirements. It helps in relieving the body of toxins and aids in the digestive process. Too much or too little drinking of water is not good for health.

Oil massage: oil massage in the morning prevents the drying out of tissues. It relaxes and nurtures the body and mind.

Mediate: Meditation relieves tension and reduces stress levels. A few minutes of meditation impart an inner feeling of peace and a person feels healed. Meditation relieves stress by reducing the stress hormone cortisol, thus helping in making immunity strong.

Sound sleep: Sound sleep helps the body detoxify and rejuvenate. During sound sleep, our cells work in harmony and strengthen our immune system. It circulates vibrant energy throughout the body. It is advisable to take a warm water bath for sound sleep and use essential oils such as lavender oil or sandalwood oil. Warm milk consumption also helps to sleep well.
