Caring – Your Liver during the long term medications.
The liver is the largest organ of the body that perform more than 500 functions. It is found on the right side of the belly. It detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs.
Certain drugs are known to cause toxicity in the liver. which can lead to liver failure in some cases.
The study published in American Journal of Gastroenterology states ” Complementary and alternative medication (72%) were the commonest cause followed by combination antituberculosis therapy drugs(27%) and other medications(1%)”.
A new study suggests unregulated drug intake is responsible for 10% of acute cases of liver failure.
Precautions to be taken:-
- Prolonged use of alternative medicines should be avoided.
- For long term therapies, side effects must be discussed and considered.
- Avoid self-medication.
- People with liver disease, obesity, diabetes and fatty liver are at higher risk of liver failure. Therefore, they should get themselves checked up regularly.
If the drug-induced effect is mild, liver functions can recover themselves. But in severe cases, medical advice should be taken.
Please take proper care of your liver.
